The Yin and Yang of Being You

Goals, Success and Significance

Relax, I am not part of the dream police. You know those people who say unless you are an entrepreneur you are failing at life. Success has no one size fits all. Your dream might be a 9 to 5 job. That is perfectly fine. It all depends on where your passion lies. One thing the dream police are right about though is the idea of settling. Settling is great only when you settle for what fulfils you.

True belief in self and your mission is the most important thing right? Well yes but have you ever found yourself so motivated but still in same place you were 12 months ago just continuously telling yourself do better. Well there are a lot of other factors to consider besides motivation. Let’s step out of our heads for a minute as I tell you the most practical lessons I had learnt while doing better.

Action. Everything I do is thought out a hundred times. I know how hard it is to actually act upon all your brilliant ideas. From personal experience the easiest remedy is to get some accountability partners. My little brother is very annoying, he doesn’t leave you alone until he gets what he wants even if you beat him. So I tell him I will give him a sweet when I’m done with what I am doing That thing ends up getting done no matter how lazy I am.

Make action a habit. If you do that for long enough it just becomes part of you. Write down your idea then do not think about it until you do something actionable. The Power of Habit is the best read in my opinion. But above all just DO something, anything.

Communication. I have been that guy who says something then ten minutes later another person says the same thing and everyone bursts into wild laughter. Then it became everyone endorsing the other guy’s idea as amazing yet I said it first. Whether you are making a motion picture or a bag of fertilizer. Or even looking for love, eventually you are going to need someone to work with or someone to trust in you or even someone to buy what you put out. No one can do that if they do no understand your idea. Learning to communicate clearly is hard. Honestly just gathering the courage to do so is hard. It takes conscious effort to put yourself out there and conscious effort to make your point understandable.

What if things change and life is turned upside down ? As my father says “be pliable, plans are made to be changed.” It may not be ideal but the hand you are dealt is the hand you have. Realign your ideas, play those cards and still win. Coronavirus should have taught you that you can only roll with the punches. Grow through what you go through. You will shocked at the version of you that comes out on the other side.

Time and Productivity. You might have no grasp of the importance of time and how to schedule. Use a calendar app on your phone. Secondly you are straight up unproductive whenever you “work” . I recommend you go on YouTube and check out Thomas Frank or Matt D’Avelia, specifically their videos on productivity. You do not have to listen to everything they say but just the basics would go a long way. Or just find a book.

Now let’s address the elephant in the room.

Money is not the centre of my ambition. In my opinion, it should no be yours either. However we would be lying if we said it’s unimportant. Have you ever been dirt broke the day after getting money ? Well I have. Not having money will make you do a lot of things you do not want. Like having to indulge your father about how good his golf swing is getting. Also it becomes a lot harder to do most things you love.

This is my two cents. First cent: Be real with yourself. If you think something is expensive, you can’t afford it, leave it alone.
Second cent: Become financially literate and free yourself from the stress of chasing money 24/7 but still being broke. The Richest man in Babylon, The Millionaire Next Door, Rich Dad Poor Dad and the Layman Investor are all excellent books. Or just grill your accountant friend for 3 hours like I did.

Now let me tell you a story

1 am on a Saturday night. More like Sunday morning, but that is not the point. Matt is feeling dream. You know that I have reached the summit of Mount Motivation feeling. You have uplifting music. Hunger and sleep are not even an issue in the slightest. One of those days when you tell yourself I am going to get to my dreams no matter what. Matt is feeling so bold that he writes out all his dreams. In the afternoon he puts the list in a frame

Ten years later, he looks at the list. At first pride floods his whole being. He did everything on the list but he feels something is missing. He shrugs it off and goes about setting bigger and better dreams.

Fast forward another ten years and Matt has ticked off the even bigger dreams but still that hole is there. But now he has enough hindsight to know what the hole is. He sees it 20/20. He is basically a celebrity by now. The sad truth is all the things he did were so forgettable. He achieved a lot of success but zero significance.

All he did was basically useless because it all revolved around him

success is about you, significance is about other people

Tim Tebow

Look at all the people with buildings named after them. Were their accomplishment not something that was people centric? The figures of the 1900s who still quoted today what were lives devoted to? Most people only know Muhammad Ali was an amazing boxer because of the social works he went on to do.

If you are one of those if it don’t make dollars it don’t make sense people I will have some words for you in future but for now ponder on this. Are the richest men of our time not creating things/applications that OTHER people all use everyday?

I became a billionaire by making a thousand people millionaires

John D. Rockefeller

Tim Tebow put it like this “The greatest tragedy of life is we’re going to look back one day and say I was successful in things that don’t matter. I want you to be successful but more than anything I want you to be significant”

Important Sidenote: How many tales do you have to hear to know that plans made without God fail, eventually ? Ask for permission to pursue

Lastly the only thing worse than not making it is making it alone. Don’t leave your people
